Historical Background and Origin The ISKCON Temple in Vrindavan, also known as Sri Sri Krishna Balaram Mandir, is one of the most famous temples dedicated to Lord Krishna and Balram. It was established by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the founder of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), in 1975. Why Vrindavan? Vrindavan is considered the holiest land for Vaishnavas, as it is the place where Lord Krishna spent his childhood. Srila Prabhupada envisioned a grand temple here that would serve as a spiritual center for Krishna devotees from around the world. Architectural Significance The temple is built with intricately carved white marble, featuring beautiful murals and paintings depicting Lord Krishna’s pastimes. The presiding deities of the temple are Krishna and Balarama at the central altar. On the right altar are Radha Krishna as Sri Sri Radha Shyamsundar with the gopis Lalita and Vishakha. On the left altar are Chaitanya Mahaprabhu with Nityananda, and ISKCON founder A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada and his guru Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati.

History

The ISKCON Temple made by Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada attracts a lot of Krishna devotees to itself every day. The expansive and beautifully made temple complex has a main shrine, an ashram for the inmates and priests, a museum, a bakery and a restaurant to buy food and refreshments. The main deities enshrines in the ISKCON Temple are Krishna and Balarama, at the central altar. On the other hand, the right altar has the idols of Radha-Krishna with the gopis Lalita and Vishakha. On the left altar is worshipped the idol of Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu with Nityananda and the founder- saints of ISKCON. The resting place of haktivedanta Swami Prabhupada is also near the main gate of this shrine.
